Mobile Air Conditioners |
Room Air ConditionersRoom air conditioners, sometimes called window air conditioners, cool rooms rather than an entire home or business. Cooling only where needed, room air conditioners are less expensive to operate than central units, but with a lower efficiency. Smaller air conditioners can be plugged into any 15- or 20-amp, 115-volt household circuit that is not shared with any other major appliance. Larger room air conditioners (drawing more than 7.5 amps) need their own dedicated 115-volt circuit. Room air conditioners generally range from 5,500 Btu per hour to 14,000 Btu per hour. National standards require new room air conditioners to have an EER of 8.0 or greater. Select an air conditioner with an EER of at least 9.0 if you live in a mild climate. If you live in a hot climate, select one with an EER over 10. Mobile Air ConditionersMobile air conditioners employ the same operating principles and basic components as your refrigerator. A mobile air conditioner cools your home with a cold indoor coil called the evaporator. The condenser, a hot outdoor coil, releases the collected heat outside. A pump, called the compressor, moves the refrigerant between the evaporator and the condenser. Mobile air conditioners extract hot air that must be vented. If the hot air is not vented, the mobile air conditioner will not be able to cool a room effectively. Therefore mobile air conditioner units are supplied with exhaust hoses, generally between 5 and 7 feet long. You may vent a portable air conditioner through a wall vent, into the attic or drop ceiling, or even around a door! All mobile air conditioners condense water as they are cooled. This water is collected in an internal reservoir. This often has an auto-shutoff so that water is never accidentally spilled. With the unit off, the water is easily emptied into a drip pan. In general, new mobile air conditioners with higher Energy Efficiency Ratings (EER) sport higher price tags. However, the higher initial cost of an energy-efficient model will be repaid to you several times during its life span. Buy the most efficient mobile air conditioner you can afford, especially if you will use your mobile air conditioner frequently or if your electricity rates are high.
